The Naked Kiss by Samuel Fuller

English:
I love a good sixties movie, starting with off beat jazz and a woman beating a man!
Samuel Fuller is one of the sixties independent filmmakers. John Cassavetes is often called the father of independent cinema, but I believe that slightly before him there were Lionel Rogosin and Shirley Clarke, which movies are quite difficult to find.
I would say that Fuller goes on with a very traditional filmmaking and that his subject is more “independent” than his filming process.
Kelly, a former prostitute, decides to make a new life, a straight life, in a small city. She falls in love with the local playboy, and tells him the truth on who she is, which doesn’t stop him from marrying her. But when she comes home to show him her dress, she discovers that the man she was about to marry is sexually attracted by children.
I won’t say more, I won’t spoil the details that make this film more enjoyable than the Stanley Kramer movies of this decade, which  also provided you with their “independent subject” but left a fluffy moralistic marshmallow aftertaste! The acting, the filming can be quite clumsy in the Naked Kiss, at least for the 2008 watchers that we are. It’s exactly as if Samuel Fuller had taken characters from a classic film noir to put them in a more realistic set, it’s a rather common way to process in our years 2000 we do that with super heroes, give them psychology, motivation and past, and a real existence, or at least a realistic one.
So what I was about to say is that despite some rigidness in the acting and filming, there is real beauty and originality bursting regularly in this film. The first scene I talked about, the children singing, and the police station scene, when Kelly is interrogated and explain that she should have known that there was something wrong with her lover as his first kiss is what professionals call a naked kiss, and which is the kiss of perverses!
